What is SEL?

It’s exactly what it sounds like! It is the development of social and emotional skills, or in other words, learning the necessary skills to be successful in life, at school and in the real world.

SEL focuses on five core areas:

  • Self-Awareness
  • Self-Management
  • Social Awareness
  • Relationship Skills
  • Responsible Decision-Making

Why do we need MindSpark Kids?

Navigating conversations with children is challenging, especially in this new era of parenting and education, where traditional resources fall short. We recognize the profound shift in awareness towards inequalities and injustices prevalent in our world — racism, gender inequality, queer rights, poverty, and various social, political, and environmental issues.

To bridge this gap, our resources feature a diverse cast of 12 core characters, including transgender, disabled, and various ethnic backgrounds. We believe that our emotional intelligence teaching resources should mirror the inclusive world we aspire to create for the next generations.

MindSpark Kids boldly advocates for inclusion, while recognizing that you, as caregivers and educators, should be the decision-makers when it comes to choosing resources that resonate with the children in your care. In this journey toward a more empathetic and inclusive world, we stand with you, empowering the conversations that shape the future.

What are some examples of Social-Emotional skills?

Expressing feelings, compassion, listening to others, conflict resolution, anger management, awareness of other people’s feelings, compromising, making friends, positive self-image, self-control, honesty, respect, asking for help, apologizing, forgiveness, empathy, thoughtfulness, resiliency, tolerance, assertiveness, creativity, humility, leadership, patience, integrity, generosity, motivation, resourcefulness, responsibility, reliability.

Who are the resources for?

The resources are for educators, mental health professionals, parents, and caregivers to use as tools to help the children and teens in their lives!

When should I start using them?

When your child shows readiness—remember, it's never too early! Each child is unique, and their individual learning abilities and experiences will signal when the time is right. Often, a child will begin expressing feelings about specific subjects and asking questions. Don't hesitate to introduce early education in a safe and supportive environment. Our resources are straightforward and easy to understand!

We generally categorize the content by two age groups; Little Kids (4-9) and Big Kids (10+ or higher maturity level).

How do they help?

Knowledge is power. At The Guiding Light Company, we believe that providing children with the facts is the best way! Shame has no place here.

Our video scripts and tools are tailored so that children have the words to describe big emotions and issues. We encourage inclusivity, help build resiliency, and challenge negative belief systems. The videos provide positive examples of how to handle negative thoughts, emotions, and actions.

Sharing these tools in the classroom, in practice and at home helps children with self-regulation and social awareness. This creates a generation of open-minded people ready to thrive in their later years.

Our videos, songs, and meditations can be used to encourage and calm various age groups.

Our worksheets provide valuable opportunities to exhibit compassion, strengthen self-awareness, learn to make good decisions, and solve problems.

Who is behind The Guiding Light Education Company?

Our tools and resources are developed by a team of parents, educators, mental health experts, and doctors. Together with a team of talented illustrators and designers, we create fun and engaging Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) resources for children of all ages.
